El viernes 4 de noviembre justo al acabar el último partido de fútbol americano Larry y yo nos dirigimos a a Fort Worth, donde pasaríamos el fin de semana en las carreras Nascar. 

-Nascar:

Friday November the fourth, right after my last football game Larry and I left to Fort Worth, where we would spend the weekend at the Nascar races.

Dormimos en una zona habilitada para caravanas a las afueras del circuito. Levantaba la cabeza y no veía otra cosa que no fueran caravanas enormes, gente con la tele de plasma y todo, era increíble, eso es lo que me gusta de sitios así, el ambiente que hay.

We slept at the camp there was around the stadium the races were at. Every time I looked in front of me all I could see were huge campers, some of them even with plasma TV and stuff like that, it was amazing. The atmosphere there is, that´s what I love of these kind of places.

El sábado después de la carrera pasamos el resto del día con la gente con la que estábamos acampados y pasamos un rato súper agradable cenando y jugando washers.

On Saturday, after the race we spent the rest of the day with the people we were camping with and had such a nice time with them during supper time and playing washers all night.

Por otro lado, las carreras fueron otro rollo. Menos mal que alquilamos unos cascos y una radio y podíamos sintonizar los canales de los pilotos y oír lo que sus equipos les decían durante la carrera, porque si no llevabas protección para los oídos volvías con los tímpanos rotos. Los motores hacían un ruido ensordecedor. 

On the other hand, the races were insane. We had scanners and we could listen to all the pilots´channels and hear what they said to each other, and we were lucky for that because if we wouldn't have used them we would have ended up deaf, the engines made so much noise.

A las puertas del estadio  había tantos puestos de merchandising de la carrera y patrocinadores que le daban la vuelta.

And out the circuit there were so many sponsors and merchandising shops that they went all around it.

Había una carrera el sábado y otra el domingo, para la cual conseguimos un pase para poder ir a la zona de boxes antes de la carrera y vimos todo el material de los equipos por la mañana, pero luego el tiempo empeoró, se puso a llover y la carrera tuvo que cancelarse, por lo que volvimos a casa antes de lo previsto.

There were two races, one on Saturday and one on Sunday and we had passes for boxes for the last one and before the race and saw all the material and equipment they use, but later on it started raining, the race was cancelled and we had to leave before we were supposed to.

-Elecciones de los Estados Unidos de América:

El martes 8 de noviembre tuvo lugar un hecho que sería histórico para la política de Estados Unidos ganase quien ganase: la primera mujer de su historia que ejerce de Presidenta o la primera persona que sin haber ejercido un puesto público antes es elegido Presidente.

-US Presidential elections:

A historical fact for the US politics would be made on Tuesday November the eighth: it didn't matter who had won, there would be the first woman as President of the USA or the first President who hasn't worked at any public office before. 

Personalmente, era un momento que quería que llegase con muchas ganas. Estoy en clase de Gobierno de US y todo lo que había aprendido hasta el momento me encantaba. El día de las elecciones fui con mis amigos a una casa y allí cenamos y vimos en la tele las estadísticas de las votaciones y todo. 

That was a moment I had been looking forward so long. I´m in US Government class and as far as I liked all I had learned until then. On Election day some friends and I met ata a house and watched the news, statistics, voting and everything on TV. 

Una ligera idea de como funciona el sistema electoral aquí es que cada estado tiene un número de votos electorales dependiendo del número de habitantes (P.e.:Texas tiene 38, California 55), y el que más porcentaje de votos tenga en un estado se lleva todos esos votos electorales, eso obliga a los candidatos a visitar durante la campaña electoral aquellos estados en los que su partido tiene más votantes para asegurarlos o aquellos estados en los que el electorado está 50%-50%, llamados ``swing states´´, como Ohio (18 votos electorales) o Florida (29 votos electorales), cuya decantación a un lado u otro puede ser decisiva a la hora de elegir Presidente.

A little summary of how electoral system works here is that each state has a number of electoral votes depending on the population they have (P.Ex.: Texas has 38, California has 55), and the candidate who has more percentage of votes in a state wins that state´s electoral votes, which makes them visit  states during their political campaign where their party has more influence (California for Democrats and Texas for Republicans, p.ex.) or visit swing states where voters are 505-50% (Ohio or Florida), whose leaning towards one party or the other can be decisive.

Aquí, en Texas, la verdad es que se vivió con intensidad, hay más partidarios de Trump que de Hillary, si hasta un día en el parking del instituto había unos alumnos dando vueltas con el coche ondeando una bandera de Trump.

Here in Texas it was lived with intensity, there are more people in favor of Trump. One day, at the high school parking lot there were some people driving around waving big Trump flags.

Fue una experiencia increíble. También me encantó hablarlo por un grupo de chat que tenemos los estudiantes de intercambio españoles, ver cómo se vivía  la situación en otros estados y las distintas opiniones de cada uno. Esa es la razón por la que estamos aquí, intercambiar opiniones y aprender de otros.

It was such a great experience, get to live that moment in the history of the US. I also loved to talk about it with the Spanish exchange student group chat, and get to know how it is like in other states and also different opinions that each of us has. And that´s why we are here, exchange opinions and learn from others.

 Pero mi experiencia electoral empezó hace ya unas cuantas semanas atrás con los debates, las distintas noticias y, algo que fue muy chocante fue la manera de hacer propaganda política a través de los anuncios, y luego los carteles del partido al que apoyan en los jardines de la gente, no sé, es diferente, pero es lo que hemos venido a buscar como estudiantes de intercambio, algo que no veríamos en nuestro país de origen.

My electoral experience began some weeks before though, with the debates, news and something I found very interesting was their propaganda through commercials, and then people putting signs of the party they support in front of their houses, I don´t know, it was just different, but that is, as well, something I as an exchange student have come here looking for, something we wouldn't see in our home country.

-Rotary meeting en Crystal Lake, Palestine:

El fin de semana del 21 al 23 de octubre hubo otra orientación en Palestine, un pueblo que está a unos 40 minutos en coche de Athens. Yo no pude ir el viernes porque tenía partido de fútbol americano, pero a primera hora de la mañana siguiente Larry me llevó y a las 8 ya estaba desayunando con los demás estudiantes de intercambio y rotarios. El lugar era impresionante, no defraudan para nada los rotarios, es que era de película.

-Rotary meeting at Crystal Lake, Palestine:

Another Rotary orientation took place from October the 21st until October the 23rd in Palestine, a town 40 minutes far from Athens. I couldn´t join them on Friday because I had a football game at Crandall, but Larry and I woke up early on Saturday morning so we could get there at breakfast time. The house we stayed in was awesome, right by the lake with amazing views.

Esa mañana fuimos al pueblo a participar en un desfile cowboy. Íbamos 10 de los estudiantes en una furgoneta con pick-up y los otros dos iban andando dando chuches a la gente. Se estaba bien, aunque hacía más calor que frío, y pasamos un buen rato ahí echándonos las risas, poniendo música y poniéndonos al día de cómo iban nuestros intercambios. Más tarde tuvimos tiempo de dar una vuelta por la feria y comer allí. La verdad es que estaba genial, había de todo y lo mejor pero que a la vez era una tortura era la comida y su olor… Ay mare! Se nos hacía la boca agua.

That morning we went to Palestine to participate on a cowboy parade. Ten of us were on the truck and the other two went by foot giving away candy to people. The weather was all right. We had such a good time there laughing, playing music and telling stories about our experiences in the States. Later, we walked around the fair and had lunch there.I really liked it, there were a lot of curious things and the best thing were the food´s smells. Everything looked soooo good!

Al volver a la casa en la que nos hospedábamos tocaba una actividad de la que ya nos habían advertido y de la cual había visto vídeos de cuando mi hermano estuvo en Crystal Lake y tenía muchas ganas de hacer: carreras de barcos de cartón. Nos dividieron en tres gruos de cuatro y a parte había dos grupos compuestos rotarios y nos dieron todos los materiales necesarios: tubos y láminas de cartón, cinta americana y cúter, la imaginación y el ingenio lo poníamos nosotros.

An activity we had already been warned of took place when we went back to the house, and which I had seen videos of my brother doing  it, in Crystal Lake, two years ago: cardboard boat races. We were divided in three groups of four people each and there were two other groups of rotarians. We were also given everything we would need: cardboard, tape and cutter. The only thing we had to provide was imagination and inventiveness.

Yo estaba en el grupo con Flávia (Brasil), Macha (Francia) y Point (Tailandia). Nuestro diseño tenía dos ``alas´´ que supuestamente proporcionaban estabilidad al barco y no se volcaría hacía un lado. Era una buena idea y tenía sentido, otra cosa muy diferente es que la llevásemos a cabo correctamente. Se rieron de que la carrera era de barcos y no de aviones, yo la verdad es que estaba convencido de que funcionaría, pero al ver que a tres metros de la orilla nos estábamos hundiendo cambiamos la estrategia a llevar el barco a rastras y al menos acabar la carrera en segundo puesto. Fue divertidísimo. Tras esto estuvimos un rato con piraguas, canoas y skyjacks, nos vendría bien para la mañana siguiente.

I was in the M&M group with Flávia (Brazil), Macha (France) and Point (Thailand). Our design had tow "wings" in order to provide stability to the boat so it wouldn't sink to one of the sides. It was a good idea and made sense, we didn't carry it out correctly though. They all made fun of us saying that it was a boat race, not a plane race, and I truly believed that it would work out but, not even ten feet far of the shore it water began coming in and it sank, so we had no choice but to grab it and pull it all the way until finish line. At least we got the second place, but obviously what really matters is the awesome time we had. After that we practiced with the canoes and skyjacks for the following day.

Por la tarde, después de hacer dipping dots tuvo lugar el concurso de talentos… En fin no hay palabras para describir aquello, es que la risa no, lo siguiente. Desde cantar y bailar hasta una demostración de karate. Yo, todo sea por las risas, canté ALC de Big Nicc (#spam) y después pusimos country y nos enseñaron a bailarlo.

In the afternoon we made some dipping dots and then... What happened then was so much fun. 
A talent show took place and we got to listen to some of the exchange students who sang, some others danced, Taisuke did a karate demonstration, and I, well, I sang ALC de Big Nicc (#spam). Later we played some country music and the rotarians taught us to dance it.

El domingo por la mañana se vino competición de la buena en las olimpiadas que hubo. Constaban de tres pruebas: carrera de relevos en canoa en la que participaban los cuatro del grupo y luego carreras de relevos de skyjack y piragua en las que participaban dos componentes del grupo en cada una.

Sunday morning the Rotary Olympics took place. There were three events: canoe relay race (two people per boat, the four of us got to do it), skyjack rally race (two of us did it), and single canoe relay race.

Al acabar las carreras y recoger todo fuimos a la entrega de premios, comimos y nos dimos el último adiós hasta la próxima reunión. ¡Nos vemos en Tulsa!

The end of these races was followed by an award ceremony, lunch and, sadly, the farewell. See y´all in Tulsa!

-Halloween:

Halloween aquí es una locura comparado con España, todo el mundo se vuelca con la causa. Todas las casas con decoraciones en el jardín desde semanas antes, y el día de Halloween fue increíble. Aquí gente de todas las edades se disfraza y sale a la calle a hacer truco o trato o van a Casas encantadas, que también está muy guapo. Yo fui a la que hace el instituto y me encantó, es un trabajo increíble. Yo, falto de recursos, cogí la equipación del equipo de fútbol en el que solía jugar, Racing Playa San Juan, y ale, de jugador de ``soccer´´que iba.

-Halloween:

Compared to Spain, Halloween in the US is way better, everybody participates in it. There were Halloween decorations in every house in town since weeks before, and Halloween day was awesome. Here everybody wears a costumes, goes trick or treating or goes to haunted houses. I went to two there were in Six Flags Over Texas and to the one the high school did, I loved it. I took the uniform of the  soccer team I used to play for in Spain, Racing Playa San Juan, and there I was with my soccer player costume.

Fútbol americano se acaba/ Football season is over

La temporada de fútbol americano se acaba:

A estas alturas el futbol americano ya ha acabado, pero lo mejor se vio al final de la temporada. El cuarto partido de district lo jugamos en casa contra Terrel, y fue el mejor partido de la temporada de lejos, aquello era fútbol americano, la intensidad con la que jugamos y la tensión que había en las gradas eran propias de un partido de la NFL, de un Clásico… Empezaron adelantándose con dos touchdowns que supimos remontar y al final de la primera mitad el marcador iba 13-14 a su favor. Lo teníamos ahí, nada estaba decidido y quedaba mucho partido por delante. Durante el descanso saltaban chispas en el vestuario, las charlas de los entrenadores, las caras, los gestos… Se podían oír hasta nuestras pulsaciones.

Football season is over:

Right now football season is over, but the best games were at the end of the season. We played the fourth district game at home against Terrel, and it was the best game of this year without doubt, that was american football, the intensity we played with and the tension there was in the stands made it look like a NFL game, like El Clásico... They started scoring two touchdowns, but later we came back and by the end of the first half the score was 13-14. We were close, nothing was sure yet and there was a lot of time left. During the break the locker room was so lit, what the coaches said, the faces, the gestures... You could even hear our heartbeats.

La segunda mitad fue incluso más emocionante. Se adelantaban en el marcador, los pasábamos… Era un tira y afloja en toda regla. A menos de cuatro minutos del final el marcador estaba 19-24 para Terrel, en las gradas todo el mundo estaba en pie, era un espectáculo aquello… Y a un minuto y poco del final sucedió, Athens se hizo con el touchdown que nos ponía dos puntos por delante. Era un sufrimiento, todos mirábamos al reloj y cada segundo parecía una hora… Hasta que llegaron los diez últimos segundos de partido, Terrel había conseguido acercarse y estaba como a treinta yardas de hacer el touchdown. Todos nos olíamos lo que iban a hacer, estaba demasiado claro, y lo hicieron. Iban a chutar un field goal que valdría tres puntos y se llevarían el partido. Se dispusieron a chutar pero el árbitro pitó para parar el partido. La gente en las gradas y en los banquillos estaba poniendo mucha presión en el kicker, hasta que no se relajaran no chutarían. Esto se repitió dos veces más, y a la siguiente pasó: el que tenía que bloquear la pelota estuvo a un palmo de tocarla y pararlo. 26-27. Fue un verdadero partido de fútbol americano, y creo que del que más orgulloso estoy. Éramos 23 personas jugando, cuando deberíamos ser como 30. De los mejores discursos que he oído en mi vida, el de Coach Brown tras el partido. No pudo tener más razón. ``Se necesitan 23 personas para hacer esto, ni más, ni menos´´. Esa noche nos despedimos del campo al grito de ``¡Familia!´´ a la de tres.

The second half was even more exciting. They took advantage in the scoreboard, then we did... That was a push and pull game. When there were less than 4 minutes of game left the score was 19-24, victory for Terrel, everybody was standing in the stands, that was awesome... And with a minute and some seconds left the miracle happened, Athens scored a touchdown and Athens was two points up. We were all looking to the clock and hoping time went fast, each second seemed to be an hour... Until the last ten seconds of game. Terrel thirty yards far from scoring the touchdown. Everybody knew what they were going to do. They were going to kick a field goal worth three points which was enough for getting that victory over us. They tried to kick it but the referee stopped the game because of all the pressure the people in the stands and in the sidelines were putting on the kicker. That happened two more times, and the next time they scored it: the blocker was so close to stop it, but he could´t. 26-27. That was a real hard football game, and I´m proud I got to play it. We were 23 people who played that game, when we were supposed to be 30. Coach Brown gave such a good speech after the game. He was right. ``It only takes 23 people´´. That night we left the field after screaming ``Family!´´ on three.

El siguiente partido lo jugamos en Crandall, y la verdad es que no nos fue tan bien, para nada estábamos a nuestro mejor nivel. Eso nos posicionaba con una victoria y cuatro derrotas, por encima de Mabank en la clasificación y empatados con Crandall y Brownsboro, contra quien jugaríamos nuestro último partido el viernes 4 de noviembre, con qué ganas esperamos ese partido.

Next Friday we went to Crandall, and we did´t do as good as the week before. By the end of that game we had one victory and four losses. In the standings we were over Mabank and tied with Crandall and Brownsboro, who we were going to play our last game on Friday November the fourth. We were dying to play that game.

También era Senior Night Game, homenajeando a los estudiantes de grado doce para los que sería su último partido como jugador, trainer, animadora, Stingrette o componente de la banda de los Athens Hornets en Bruce Field, y a pesar de que yo soy del grado once me sentía igual que ellos, no quería que la temporada acabase ahí, quería que esa experiencia durase lo máximo posible. 

That day was also Senior Night, and we honored the twelve grader students because that would be their last high school football game as an Athens Hornet football player, trainer, band musician, cheerleader or Stingrette in Bruce Field. Even though I´m in grade eleven I kind of felt like them, that would be my last game and I wanted that experience to last as long as possible.

Fue un día muy especial, nos permitieron llevar ropa de camuflaje porque el tópico era ``Cage the bears´´(Enjaular a los osos), que era la mascota de Brownsboro, y luego en el Pep rally hicimos una pequeña actuación para los seniors en la que repasamos todas las etapas por las que han pasado hasta graduarse. Iba a ser una gran noche.

It was a very special day. The topic was ``Cage the bears´´(Brownsboro´s mascot), and we were allowed to wear camo, and later in the Pep rally we did a short performance for the seniors in which we went through their path since kindergarten until graduation. It would be a GREAT night.

Este era un partido especial, ya no sólo para nosotros, si no para el pueblo de Athens. La gente mayor, los que jugaron fútbol americano en el instituto, le tienen esa rivalidad a Brownsboro propia de dos ciudades pegadas la una a la otra, más de uno tenía familia allí y no podía permitirse perder y que tres semanas más tarde se lo restrieguen en Acción de Gracias, si querían ganarnos tendrían que sudar sangre.

This was a special game, not only for us, but for people in Athens. There´s rivalry between both towns, and those who played high school football years ago had that strong feeling against Brownsboro, many people has family over there and they could´t loose or they´d make fun of them three weeks later in Thanksgiving, they would have to give their all if they wanted to beat us.

Finalmente el momento llegó. Salir al campo y ver la grada visitante y la grada local repleta de gente: estudiantes, amigos, familiares, pueblos vecinos, que por una noche estaban enfrentados. Era súper emocionante y el ambiente que había…

Finally, the moment arrived. Going out to the field and see the visitor stands full of people: students, relatives, friends, that during all night would be opposing each other. It was very exciting and the atmosphere was... Indescribable. 

Y por fin empezó el espectáculo. Ambos equipos jugando duro, dándolo todo. Se adelantaron en el marcador con dos touchdowns y fallaron uno de los field goals que chutaron, pero pudimos remontar y acabar la primera mitad 14-13. Saltaban chispas en el vestuario, y las gradas estaban al rojo vivo, te guste o no el fútbol americano era un momento en el que a cualquiera le gustaría haber estado.

And finally the show began. Both teams played hard, leaving everything they had on the field. They scored first, and missed one of the PATs, so later we came back and finished the first half 14-13. The locker room and the stands were lit. It does´t matter if you like or not football, it was a experience anyone would love to be part of.

Al reanudarse el partido hubo incluso más intensidad. Estuvo reñido hasta que nos empezamos a adelantar en el marcador, hasta quedar 35-21. Fue un gran último partido, echaré de menos esos momentos de tensión, de disfrute, de emoción, madrugar, trabajar duro, los entrenamientos, las risas del vestuario. La verdad es que me lo he pasado genial, estoy contento de haber tomado la decisión de formar parte del programa de futbol americano.

When the second half started we played even more intense. The game was tied until we got advantage in the scoreboard. The final score was 35-21. It was a great game, I´ll miss those moments of excitement, emotion, getting up early, working hard, practices, having good times in the locker room. I´m glad I took the choice of being part of the Athens Hornets Football program.
