I still remember that Monday August the eighth, at eight o´clock in the morning, when Larry drove me to the track where I met Coach Thompson. I was the only person who showed up and, for a moment, I thought that cross country season would be a thing of two: the coach and I, but I had the fortune of being wrong, and next day I met Lily, and the next day Kris and Chelly, it was like that until I got to meet the sixteen runners who composed the team. I stopped practicing for a couple of weeks because `Ì had no time´´. I started athletics class at 7:20 and I had football in the afternoons. Later I noticed I had to take it more seriously, so I started going to morning practice at 6:30, with Aryn and Lily.
En España siempre que alguien me decía que se despertaba antes de las siete yo respondía con un `à mí antes de esa hora no me sacas de la cama ni en broma´´, sin embargo correr por las mañanas pasó a ser parte del día perfecto, los dos días que no hubo entrenamiento por la mañana lo primero que pensaba era lo difícil que sería ese día sin correr antes de ir a athletics, a parte de que me hacía rendir mejor.
In Spain, whenever somebody told me they woke up earlier than seven am i replied saying ``there´s no way you can wake me up before that time´´, however, after start running at that time it became in something I had to do every day, I felt way better when I run before class, it was part of a perfect day for me, the days we couldn't practice first thing I thought was how difficult it would be without my morning run.

En mi primera práctica hice las tres millas en 21 min 43 segundos creo, y desde entonces no he hecho más que mejorar mi marca. Mi primera carrera, la de Kaufman, la corrí con JV y conseguí la segunda posición, a partir de ahí corrí con Varsity, donde he conseguido 5 medallas.
El martes 18 de octubre, la semana pasada, tuvo lugar en Fairfield el campeonato del distrito, donde el top 10 individual y el top 3 en equipos pasarían a Regionals. En individual, hacerlo en 17:41 minutos me valió para hacerme con la cuarta posición, y por equipos nos clasificamos en tercera posición. Regionals era el sábado de la semana siguiente (29 de octubre), y el equipo lo esperaba con unas ganas tremendas... ¡Y por fin llegó!
El viernes después de clase nos reunimos en el gimnasio, donde cogeríamos el bus para ir a Huntsville a ver el recorrido. Estaba bien, ya nos habían dicho que tendría más colinas de lo normal y que sería durillo. Tras ver el recorrido fuimos a cenar comida italiana -si hubiese sido española habríamos ganado de sobra ;)- y después fuimos al hotel que teníamos en Madisonville, a media hora de allí, y la verdad es que tuvimos una suerte increíble.
La habitación era enorme, una cama doble para cada uno, cuarto de baño, cafetera, tele de plasma, y Carlos le puso la guinda al pastel trayendo la Play. Pasamos un buen rato echando unos FIFAs antes de irnos a dormir.

First time I run in Athens I did three miles in 21:43 minutes, since then I´ve done nothing but improve my time. In my first Cross country meet at Kaufman I ran with JV and i placed second, since then I started running with varsity, team I´ve won five medals with.
Tuesday October the eighteenth, last week, District meet took place at Fairfield, where top 10 individuals and top 3 teams would qualify to Regionals. I placed fourth, doing it in 17:41 minutes, and we also qualified as a team in third place. Regionals was the Saturday of the following week (October the twenty-ninth), and we were all waiting for it very anxiously... And it finally came!
On Friday right after class we all met in the gym, from where we would take a bus and drive to Huntsville to see the track before the race. It was a pretty good race, with more hills than usually as we had been warned, so it´d be kind of hard. After that we went to have supper to an Italian restaurant -if it had been Spanish we´d had won by far;)- and then we went to the hotel we where going to stay in at Madisonville, half an hour away, and we were really lucky with it.
The bedroom was huge, with a queen sized bed for each one, bathroom, coffee maker, plasm tv... And Carlos put the cherry on top bringing the console. We had good times playing FIFA before going to sleep.
El sábado por la mañana nos despertamos a las 6:40, y a las 8 ya estábamos por Huntsville. Había mucha, muchísima niebla, que en la carretera no se veía más de 5 metros por delante, y en el primer cross del día las corredoras se perdían de vista de lo densa que era. Conforme avanzó la mañana se fue dispersando, y cuando nos tocó correr a las 9 estaba mucho mejor.

Saturday morning we woke up at 6:40 and at 8 we already were at Huntsville. It was very, very foggy, we couldn't see further than 5 meters in front of us, and in the first race that took place runners went into the fog and we could´t see them, but as the day went on it was less foggy, and when we ran at 9 it was way better.
Estábamos todos nerviosos porque por fin había llegado el momento de correr Regionals, para algunos podía ser su última carrera en el equipo de Cross country de Athens, y para muchos otros solo era el comienzo de lo que les va a esperar los próximos años. Yo, personalmente, estaba muy nervioso por esa misma razón, no quería dejar de correr con este equipo y la única manera de hacerlo posible era clasificándonos para State.

We were all nervous because we had been waiting for this moment so much time, for some of us it could be the last race, and for some others it was the beginning of a brilliant future. I was really nervous for that reason as well, I did´t want to stop running with this team and the only way to make it real was making State.
Solo hemos rezado en grupo dos veces con el equipo de cross country, en District y en Regionals, y ambas veces me he emocionado solo de pensar que esa podía ser la última carrera como equipo, pero la segunda vez fue más motivadora y emotiva ya que todos llegamos a decir algo y eso nos unió y ayudó bastante.
We have only done team prayer with the cross country team twice, before District and before Regionals, and both times I got excited with the thought of that race being the last one as a team, but the second time was more motivational and emotional because all of us got to say something and that helped and bonded us even more as a team.

Éramos conscientes de que no sería fácil, y no lo fue. Desde el primer momento veías a gente pasándote que decías ``madre mía no lo pillo ni en broma´´ y luego te encontrabas a alguno de ellos sin gasolina y lo pasabas. Yo iba a tirones, apretaba demasiado, me daba cuenta y me controlaba, volvía a apretar... Y así hasta el final de la carrera donde hice los últimos 500 metros a sprint y al llegar a meta casi no podía mantenerme en pie, y en cuestión de un par de minutos más o menos ya estaba el equipo completo en meta, solo faltaba esperar a que salieran los resultados.
We were conscious that it wouldn't be easy, and sure it wasn't. Since the very first moment there was people passing you and you thought ``oh my God I´m not getting them again´´and them you saw them without energy and passed them. I was speeding up, then I noticed and regulated it, then speeded up again... Until the last 500 yards where I sprinted them all and when I finished I couldn't even stay stand up. In less than two minutes the whole team had finished, we only had to wait for the results.
A State pasaban top 4 de equipos y luego top 10 individual, pero la cosa es que los que se clasificaban en equipo, al estar ya clasificados no los cuentan en individual, por lo que pasaban 38 corredores en total. Yo hice un tiempo de 18:15 minutos, quedando 41º individual (éramos 159) y 14º en equipos (éramos 23 equipos).
Top 4 teams and top 10 individual made State, but those who qualified as a team, as they were already in State they weren't counted as individual so there were 38 people qualifying in total. My time was 18:15 minutes, placed 41 of 159 runners and 14 of 23 teams.

Es una pena que haya acabado tan pronto la temporada de cross country, he pasado muy buenos ratos con todos y la verdad que echaré de menos correr a su lado. Por otra parte estoy contento por haber compartido esta experiencia con ellos, no podría estar mas orgulloso de lo que hemos logrado como equipo y cada uno como individual. Para los seniors y para mí ha sido nuestra última carrera, pero para aquellos que continúan el año que viene en cross country les esperan unos resultados increíbles, la verdad es que tendrán muy buen equipo y estoy seguro de que llegarán lejos si siguen trabajando como han hecho, estoy verdaderamente orgulloso y agradecido de y a todos. Ahora tengo nuevas fotos que poner en las paredes de mi habitación cuando vuelva a España y así poder revivirlo todos los días, y puedo decir más que orgulloso que he formado parte del equipo de Cross country de Athens en 2016 y que llegamos a Regionals.
Quería dar las gracias a Larry por llevarme todas las mañanas a las 6:30 a las prácticas y al Coach Thompson por estar ahí tanto por las mañanas como por las tardes, encargándose de un grupo de adolescentes, lo cual nunca ha sido fácil, asegurándose de que todo está en orden, todos tienen la equitación y saben los horarios, y preparando y entrenándoles.
It´s sad that the cross country season is already over, I´ve had very good times with these people and I´ll really miss running with them. On the other hand I´m glad I shared this experience with them , I couldn't be prouder of what we have achieved as a team and each of us individually. For the seniors and for me it was our last race, but for those who will continue next year there are incredible results waiting for them, they´ll have a pretty good team and I´m sue they´ll go far if they keep training as hard as they´ve done, I´m really proud and grateful of them. Now I have new photos to fill my bedroom walls with when I go back to Spain and bring these memories back every day, and I can say really proud that I´ve been part of the 2016 Athens Cross country team and that we got to Regionals.

I wanted to say thanks too to Larry for driving me to the high school every single morning at 6:30 and to Coach Thompson for being there in the morning and later in the afternoon, dealing with a crowd of teens making sure everything is okay, everyone has the stuff he/she needs and training and preparing them.
Coach, thanks for everything, for making me a better runner and also a better component of this team, I really appreciate everything you´ve said to support and cheer me up, I´ve never forget these three months with you all.
