Fútbol americano se acaba/ Football season is over

Football season is over:

Right now football season is over, but the best games were at the end of the season. We played the fourth district game at home against Terrel, and it was the best game of this year without doubt, that was american football, the intensity we played with and the tension there was in the stands made it look like a NFL game, like El Clásico... They started scoring two touchdowns, but later we came back and by the end of the first half the score was 13-14. We were close, nothing was sure yet and there was a lot of time left. During the break the locker room was so lit, what the coaches said, the faces, the gestures... You could even hear our heartbeats.

The second half was even more exciting. They took advantage in the scoreboard, then we did... That was a push and pull game. When there were less than 4 minutes of game left the score was 19-24, victory for Terrel, everybody was standing in the stands, that was awesome... And with a minute and some seconds left the miracle happened, Athens scored a touchdown and Athens was two points up. We were all looking to the clock and hoping time went fast, each second seemed to be an hour... Until the last ten seconds of game. Terrel thirty yards far from scoring the touchdown. Everybody knew what they were going to do. They were going to kick a field goal worth three points which was enough for getting that victory over us. They tried to kick it but the referee stopped the game because of all the pressure the people in the stands and in the sidelines were putting on the kicker. That happened two more times, and the next time they scored it: the blocker was so close to stop it, but he could´t. 26-27. That was a real hard football game, and I´m proud I got to play it. We were 23 people who played that game, when we were supposed to be 30. Coach Brown gave such a good speech after the game. He was right. ``It only takes 23 people´´. That night we left the field after screaming ``Family!´´ on three.

Next Friday we went to Crandall, and we did´t do as good as the week before. By the end of that game we had one victory and four losses. In the standings we were over Mabank and tied with Crandall and Brownsboro, who we were going to play our last game on Friday November the fourth. We were dying to play that game.

That day was also Senior Night, and we honored the twelve grader students because that would be their last high school football game as an Athens Hornet football player, trainer, band musician, cheerleader or Stingrette in Bruce Field. Even though I´m in grade eleven I kind of felt like them, that would be my last game and I wanted that experience to last as long as possible.

It was a very special day. The topic was ``Cage the bears´´(Brownsboro´s mascot), and we were allowed to wear camo, and later in the Pep rally we did a short performance for the seniors in which we went through their path since kindergarten until graduation. It would be a GREAT night.

This was a special game, not only for us, but for people in Athens. There´s rivalry between both towns, and those who played high school football years ago had that strong feeling against Brownsboro, many people has family over there and they could´t loose or they´d make fun of them three weeks later in Thanksgiving, they would have to give their all if they wanted to beat us.

Finally, the moment arrived. Going out to the field and see the visitor stands full of people: students, relatives, friends, that during all night would be opposing each other. It was very exciting and the atmosphere was... Indescribable.

And finally the show began. Both teams played hard, leaving everything they had on the field. They scored first, and missed one of the PATs, so later we came back and finished the first half 14-13. The locker room and the stands were lit. It does´t matter if you like or not football, it was a experience anyone would love to be part of.

When the second half started we played even more intense. The game was tied until we got advantage in the scoreboard. The final score was 35-21. It was a great game, I´ll miss those moments of excitement, emotion, getting up early, working hard, practices, having good times in the locker room. I´m glad I took the choice of being part of the Athens Hornets Football program.

Cross country is over!! :(

I still remember that Monday August the eighth, at eight o´clock in the morning, when Larry drove me to the track where I met Coach Thompson. I was the only person who showed up and, for a moment, I thought that cross country season would be a thing of two: the coach and I, but I had the fortune of being wrong, and next day I met Lily, and the next day Kris and Chelly, it was like that until I got to meet the sixteen runners who composed the team. I stopped practicing for a couple of weeks because `Ì had no time´´. I started athletics class at 7:20 and I had football in the afternoons. Later I noticed I had to take it more seriously, so I started going to morning practice at 6:30, with Aryn and Lily.

In Spain, whenever somebody told me they woke up earlier than seven am i replied saying ``there´s no way you can wake me up before that time´´, however, after start running at that time it became in something I had to do every day, I felt way better when I run before class, it was part of a perfect day for me, the days we couldn't practice first thing I thought was how difficult it would be without my morning run.

First time I run in Athens I did three miles in 21:43 minutes, since then I´ve done nothing but improve my time. In my first Cross country meet at Kaufman I ran with JV and i placed second, since then I started running with varsity, team I´ve won five medals with.
Tuesday October the eighteenth, last week, District meet took place at Fairfield, where top 10 individuals and top 3 teams would qualify to Regionals. I placed fourth, doing it in 17:41 minutes, and we also qualified as a team in third place. Regionals was the Saturday of the following week (October the twenty-ninth), and we were all waiting for it very anxiously... And it finally came!
On Friday right after class we all met in the gym, from where we would take a bus and drive to Huntsville to see the track before the race. It was a pretty good race, with more hills than usually as we had been warned, so it´d be kind of hard. After that we went to have supper to an Italian restaurant -if it had been Spanish we´d had won by far;)- and then we went to the hotel we where going to stay in at Madisonville, half an hour away, and we were really lucky with it.
The bedroom was huge, with a queen sized bed for each one, bathroom, coffee maker, plasm tv... And Carlos put the cherry on top bringing the console. We had good times playing FIFA before going to sleep.

Saturday morning we woke up at 6:40 and at 8 we already were at Huntsville. It was very, very foggy, we couldn't see further than 5 meters in front of us, and in the first race that took place runners went into the fog and we could´t see them, but as the day went on it was less foggy, and when we ran at 9 it was way better.

Fruzsi vino a animar a Regionals, muchísimas gracias ;)
Fruzsi came to Regionals to support, thank you very much ;)
We were all nervous because we had been waiting for this moment so much time, for some of us it could be the last race, and for some others it was the beginning of a brilliant future. I was really nervous for that reason as well, I did´t want to stop running with this team and the only way to make it real was making State.

We have only done team prayer with the cross country team twice, before District and before Regionals, and both times I got excited with the thought of that race being the last one as a team, but the second time was more motivational and emotional because all of us got to say something and that helped and bonded us even more as a team.
Última e increíble carrera.
Awesome but last race.

Yo iba a tirones, apretaba demasiado, me daba cuenta y me controlaba, volvía a apretar...

We were conscious that it wouldn't be easy, and sure it wasn't. Since the very first moment there was people passing you and you thought ``oh my God I´m not getting them again´´and them you saw them without energy and passed them. I was speeding up, then I noticed and regulated it, then speeded up again... Until the last 500 yards where I sprinted them all and when I finished I couldn't even stay stand up. In less than two minutes the whole team had finished, we only had to wait for the results.

Top 4 teams and top 10 individual made State, but those who qualified as a team, as they were already in State they weren't counted as individual so there were 38 people qualifying in total. My time was 18:15 minutes, placed 41 of 159 runners and 14 of 23 teams.

Arrasando en LaPoynor.
Triumphing at LaPoynor.

It´s sad that the cross country season is already over, I´ve had very good times with these people and I´ll really miss running with them. On the other hand I´m glad I shared this experience with them , I couldn't be prouder of what we have achieved as a team and each of us individually. For the seniors and for me it was our last race, but for those who will continue next year there are incredible results waiting for them, they´ll have a pretty good team and I´m sue they´ll go far if they keep training as hard as they´ve done, I´m really proud and grateful of them. Now I have new photos to fill my bedroom walls with when I go back to Spain and bring these memories back every day, and I can say really proud that I´ve been part of the 2016 Athens Cross country team and that we got to Regionals.

There are more memories, they are in my heart though.
I wanted to say thanks too to Larry for driving me to the high school every single morning at 6:30 and to Coach Thompson for being there in the morning and later in the afternoon, dealing with a crowd of teens making sure everything is okay, everyone has the stuff he/she needs and training and preparing them.

Coach, thanks for everything, for making me a better runner and also a better component of this team, I really appreciate everything you´ve said to support and cheer me up, I´ve never forget these three months with you all.

Entrando a meta tras Carlos.

Primer placaje, Six Flags y la Feria del Estado de Texas / First tackle, Six Flags and Texas State Fair

Lunes 19 Septiembre-Domingo 9 Octubre, 2016
Monday September the nineteenth- Sunday October the ninth, 2016

-Football:

Sunset, by Natalie.
On Friday October the 23rd we had our first district game. There are six district games and at the end of them the three or four first teams go to play offs. We played Mabank, a town close to Athens with which there is a rivalry. We were winning since first quarter and the final score was 14-42, victory for us. It was such a special game for me because I kicked all the extra points and kick offs and i also made my first tackle. It hurt because the other player hit me with his head on my chest and I´m not used to that, but the ``worst´´thing was the crowd that jumped on me congratulating me for stopping another Mabank touchdown. It really was an amazing game, the week after I was awarded with the ``Bone crusher´´ award. But we lost the following games the thirtieth against Van and the seventh against Kaufman.

-Cross country:

-Cross country:

Saturday after playing Mabank I ran in Lapoynor a completely flat five kilometer trail in which I got the third place and I did it in 18 minutes 11 seconds, my best mark until then. At that race Athens cross country team did such a good job getting a bunch of medals.
The Saturday after that one I did an awful race at Ferris, where even though i finished seventh i did the race in 19 minutes. I got really upset with myself, but I´ve been able to make the most of it and the following race, on Saturday the eighth at Fairfield I did five km in 17 minutes 40 seconds. The good new is that that will be the district so I already know the trail and I know the pace I have to set at each part of it.

-Six Flags Over Texas:

-Six Flags Over Texas:

Right after running at Lapoynor I went to one of the best theme parks i´ve ever been to, Six Flags Over Texas, with Bayleigh and her family. In addition, because of Halloween there was the Fright Fest, an event in which zombies, creepy clowns, ghosts and other monsters are set free and walk around the park shouting and scaring people, so you are all the time hearing screams and, to be honest, it was really funny seeing people jumping over picnic tables and running as they have never done.
The following week I came back with my friends and we had an awesome time. We rode most of the rides and there are no words for describing it, I wouldn't be able to choose only one ride.
Both times I went i also visited haunted houses at the park (there are five or six). First time, I went to one that was like a slaughterhouse, and the second time I went to a different one called Circus which was full of creepy clowns. None of them scared me as I thought they were going to.
The second time I went, one of the best things was the driving from Athens to Arlington and back, those moments are always the best part of trips, sharing a good time with your friends.

Texas State Fair:

On Saturday October the eighth I went with Larry, Chris and Lacey to the Texas State Fair in Dallas. It´s amazing. First we did was riding the ferris wheel, which was the biggest of the US for a while, the Texas Star, from which we had incredible views of Dallas and the fair. We were also able to see the football game of the Texas A&M University against Oklahoma University Sooners, and hat was the reason why the fair was specially crowded. There was a zone in the fair with a huge screen where people were able to watch the game, and suddenly in the last play of the game that could have changed the score it looses the connection and switches off. That was really funny. Finally Oklahoma got the victory.
I also had the pleasure of meeting Big Tex, a 28 meter (55 feet) figure that moved and talked which is the image of the fair. There were lots of bars and restaurants where it was: very long lines everywhere, hustle and bustle... And a charming mouth-watering smell. That was the first time I ate alligator meat, and it tasted pretty good. The fun fact was that you could find ANYTHING fried, I mean my dessert was freed cheesecake and fried brownies. It first sounded nasty to me but once you try it you know you were wrong. That´s also the reason why I´ll come back with some more weight.
After having lunch we kept walking in the fair until we got to te cuttle zone, where I was able to touch and take a picture with a longhorn. There was a bunch of them, everyone with bigger horns than the previous. Then, we went to a cow show presented by real cowboys, that live of cuttle, and I was quite amazed with the way they managed with angry cows and the control they had over their horses.
For finishing, there was a cool parade, and later a brand new show which combined fireworks, lights, water and choreographies that were pure gymnastics, it was gorgeous, the day could´t have ended in a better way.

-Meet the hornets:

-Meet the hornets:

On Monday October the third, in the evening, the high school sports teams were presented. Junior Varsity teams were just named while Varsity teams were named player by player and they went up to a platform. There was a good crowd, and a good atmosphere was formed with the band, food and laughs.
Nevertheless, the weirdest thing I did that day was letting Sierra and Maci take me to eat ice cream with french fries. It was like fried brownies though: it tastes better than it looks.

 -Never forget your background:

After the meet in Ferris the Russell family and I went to Plano to meet some friends we were going to spend the day with. We had lunch at a Spanish food restaurant where I ate some of my home country dishes such as patatas bravas, tortilla de patatas, embutidos, calamares a la romana... It was pretty good, but with no doubt the best thing was the alioli sauce, I swear it tasted very similar to the one in Spain and it was really good. Instead of whit it was green though because they made it with cilantro. In the afternoon we went shopping. We had a really good time.

West Texas, Labor Day & Homecoming

Lunes 28 Agosto 2016-Domingo 18 Septiembre, 2016
Monday 28th August -Sunday 18th September, 2016

After being a few weeks here there´s a routine so it´s like every day in Alicante.

-American football:

September the first we played Fairfield, and both JV and Varsity lost.
The following week we played Red Oak, and either JV or Varsity could win. I think that it wasn't JV´s best day, we were all without energy, unfocused, and it was a disaster.
Despite that, this last week we played against Waco Robinson, and even though we lost again we were happier than with other games because we had played awesome, everyone did a good job and both teams played hard, it was our best game with no doubt, we showed we are improving.
Moreover, this week we have played Waco Robinson has been Homecoming and it´s been amazing.

Athens Cross Country team
-Cross country:

Finishing right after Carlos.

-Cross country:

I´m very proud of my results in cross country because the more races I run the better my time is. When i first came to the US i could run 3 miles (5km) in 21 minutes 43 seconds, in the first race I did it in 19 minutes 33 seconds (august the 26th, saturday, Kaufman), in the second one 19 minutes 20 seconds (saturday sept. the tenth, Tyler), and in the last one I ran yesterday in 18 minutes 47 seconds (saturday sept. the 17th, Canton).
District is October the eighteenth and I´m very excited about running it, I think we have an awesome team and we can do a lot.

-Golf:

-Golf:

Last Sunday (sept. the eleventh) I went with Larry, Chris and Taylor to the Athens Country Club and we spent the afternoon there. In Alicante my house is next to a golf court and I had never played until last Sunday. I believed it would be easy but it´s not. After making some holes on the ground I got to hit the ball and improve. Thanks to everyone who was there with me I could do it much better and learn a couple things about golf.

-Camping in West Texas:

En el arcén haciendo auto-stop...
Doing auto-stop by the side of the road...
Friday September the second Larry took me camping to West Texas. I had already been warned that it would be as I thought Texas was before coming to the US: very hot, very dry, desert... But it was´t like that. It was hot and it was dry, but there were lots of bushes, not very leafy trees, and bunches of cactus. We also needed high boots because of snakes. Liked it a lot, in addition, there wasn't a lot of altitude but there were some streams making small canyons and some flatlands over the rest.

Despite that, what I fell in love with was the sky in the night, it was full of stars, I could see the Milky Way... I have only seen a sky like that one in the south of Portugal, it reminded me of that moment during that trip with my family when we were sitting in the night and we could see everything in the sky, thats one of those things you stare at with the mouth opened, amazed.

-Labor Day:

-Labor Day:

Here labor day is always the first Monday of September.
After camping weekend it was Labor Day, there was no high school and the Russell family invited some friends, made burgers, we swam... I had so much fun. The hamburgers they made were the ones they were going to do for the Uncle Fletch Hamburger Festival in Athens, where hamburger was created.
That festival took place yesterday and they got the third place in originality and the second place in the gourmet category.

-Homecoming (hoco):

One of the student floats.

-Homecoming (hoco):

Homecoming is a tradition they do every year in which old students come back and they are welcomed, there´s a parade, students vote a Homecoming Queen, boys ask girls for a homecoming date... I love it, i had so much fun. This time I saw the game from the stands and not from the field as I´ve done before and it was awesome.
The tradition is that the boy asks the girl for a homecoming date and they go together to see the game and he gives her a mum she has to wear on her chest and she gives him a garter he has to put on his arm.

Mi garter.
My garter.
But homecoming isn´t only the game day. all the week long there is like crazy dress up topics. On Monday it was the crazy socks day, on Tuesday tie dye day, on Wednesday super hero day, on Thursday 80´s day and on Friday it was the Spirit day and people wear the high school color (maroon) or sports t-shirts of when they classify or win a tournament.

It was a pity that we lost the homecoming game because it was like our day and we had to win it, it an issue of pride, and it also was the last game before district.
